FEV Europe GmbH (FEV)

About FEV
Founded in 1978 the FEV Group GmbH has now more than 5500 employees worldwide at more than 40 subsidiaries on four continents. Since its foundation the company collaborates with the RWTH Aachen University in research activities and performs technology transfer to industrial applications. The company has not only access to numerous testing laboratories but also to relevant industry, technological, research, academic and market sources and coverage to provide thorough and relevant reviews and analysis of issues involved. FEV Europe GmbH (FEV) is an independent internationally recognized company in the design and development of powertrains, power units and burners as well as a manufacturer of prototypes and instrumentation systems.

With numerous projects FEV can bring in its knowledge for tasks related to the measurement and determination of regulated and non-regulated tailpipe emissions in laboratory and/or real-world conditions. The company is competent in the assessment of the emission reduction potential of alternative fuels (incl. bi-fuel systems) and the assessment of possibilities for verifying durability and in-service conformity for extended lifetime operation of vehicles or machinery. FEV has extensive experience in HiL-models for powertrain and ATS.

Role in the project
The capabilities extend to power system packaging and powertrain systems integration, including the control of integrated powertrain functions, certification, calibration and homologation for advanced internal combustion gasoline-, diesel- and alternative-fueled powertrains. FEV also prototypes advanced vehicle / powertrain electronic control systems and hybrid-electric engine concepts that address future emission and fuel economy standards. The conduction and evaluation of optical investigations is integral part of combustion development. The related methodology and equipment keeps being continuously enhanced. Measurement results from optics serve to ensure clean and efficient combustion and are used for validation of reactive 3D CFD simulations.

FEV develops and uses mathematical models for the analysis of mechanical stress and noise and acoustic, combustion and flow processes, thermal and medium flow management and for catalysis processes. In 2017 the company continued to push ahead with its global “smart vehicle” development efforts by establishing a global center of excellence (CoE) focusing on the interdisciplinary development of connectivity and the automation of future vehicle development. In addition to the integration of advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving functions (ADAS and AD), this will include infotainment and telematics systems as well as connected vehicle networking – meaning Car2X and Car2Cloud communication and the closely linked topic of cyber security.
